A plantscapers comment on Pantone Color of the Year 2022

Look no further if you’re looking for Interior Design plantspiration. Plants don’t just come in green, and colourful plants will transform any dull, dark room, office, or venue. At Benholm Group we’re passionate about keeping up to date with trends and we were so excited to see the announcement of Pantone’s Color of the Year 2022.

Pantone is the company that sets one of the most widely recognised colour standards and their Color of the Year 2022 is Very Peri, a dynamic periwinkle as a response to the transformative times we are living in. As we enter the third year of the COVID-19 pandemic our ideas and standards are changing. This brand-new shade created by Pantone displays a joyous attitude and dynamic presence that encourages creativity and imaginative expression. It’s a colour that inspires inventiveness and encompasses the qualities of blues and possesses a violet-red undertone. For the first time Pantone has selected a shade that wasn’t in its existing catalogue as its Color of the Year 2022. The resulting Very Peri is similar to colours commonly found in nature, such as lavender flowers.

For 23 years Pantone’s Color of the Year has influenced multiple industries including fashion, home furnishings, and industrial design, as well as product packaging and graphic design. Last year, the brand broke with tradition and selected two tones as its colours of the year. Ultimate Gray, a simple grey colour, and Illuminating, a cheerful yellow, were its choices for 2021.

We love this colour, and we can bring it to life in your designs and spaces. We let creativity blossom and we’re excited to see how this colour will be used throughout 2022. We’ve picked out some of our previous projects where we’ve used colours taking inspiration from Very Peri.

Floral trends that you can expect to see in 2022

Floral design trends, just like fashion trends, are constantly evolving. Flowers are more important and expressive than ever to lift the mood. A floral trend refers to the general direction that floral designs are shifting towards. There are so many factors that impact and cause changes to flower and plant trends, types, varieties, colours, designs, styles, and arrangements.

At Benholm Group we love to stay on top of the next big trends, so we’ve put together a list of some top floral trends for this year that look set to gather momentum throughout 2022.

Dried flowers

Due to the current high demand for flowers and more sustainability-minded shopping, silk flowers, dried flowers and preserved flowers are expected to stay in high demand too. Dried flowers not only appear as flowers but also grasses, branches, leaves, and even weeds.  With appealing shapes, colours, and textures, dried flowers are a huge hit, and they are an excellent interior design element. Dried blooms are an elegant option that will stay looking as lovely as the day they were delivered.

Colour

The biggest colour trends of 2022 are entrenched in optimism, warmth, growth, and excitement as we head into the third year of the COVID-19 pandemic. Shades of green are dominating colour trend predictions for 2022! One of the top key colours for 2022 is Olive Oil. This colour can be found in grasses, leaves, succulents, and aloe plants. A reflection of our need for resiliency, greens are rich, uplifting, and full of wellness.

Tropical plants and flowers

Tropical flora trends remain popular. Think exotic plants like palm trees, frangipani, citrus fruits, and orchids. But also, lush green tropical plants like the monstera and the philodendron to decorate workspaces. Adding plants to your environment is one of the most natural ways to improve wellness.

Asymmetrical designs

Asymmetrical designs have shifted from fashion to floristry. Shape and texture in floral arrangements are to be played with in 2022. Floral installations will feature flower clouds and big pops of flowers to fill spaces and create impact.

Flirty florals

Combine flowers with ruffled textures and a looser arrangement style to create a glorious new look for flowers in the coming year. Feathery flower varieties combined with lacy and airy foliage in loose natural stylings create an elegant yet comfortable and laid-back style that has a positive and calming effect on our environment. Ideal choices for this trend include carnations, hydrangea, roses, and chrysanthemums.

Scotland’s Tourism Industry Conference 2021

Scotland’s Tourism Industry Conference took place 24th and 25th November 2021 and it was held in Edinburgh’s International Conference Centre (EICC).

This was the first opportunity in over 18 months for Scotland’s tourism community to come together to reconnect, learn, share knowledge, inspire each other, and celebrate achievements in all that they’ve done as an industry to navigate their way through the toughest period imaginable.

The event was delivered and hosted by the Scottish Tourism Alliance (STA), the Association of Scottish Visitor Attractions (ASVA), HIT Scotland (Hospitality Industry Trust) and Scotland Food & Drink. The two-day event was shaped around Scotland’s Future Tourism Strategy, ‘Scotland Outlook 2030‘. The key priorities of the strategy are reflective of the changing world we live in and represent the beginning of a bold new approach to deliver the very best for communities, people, visitors, businesses, and the environment.

There were many interesting speakers at the conference such as Simon Calder – Independent Travel Journalist, Iain Stewart MP – Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Scotland, Ann Morrow Johnson – Executive Producer and Creative Director at Walt Disney Imagineering and Andrea Nicholas – Co-founder of the Green Tourism Certification Programme.

More than ever since covid-19, many hotels, bars, visitor attractions and restaurants understand the importance and the need for plants and flowers in and around their venues to help promote cleaner air and improve their customers wellbeing. Both real and artificial plants can transform a guest’s experience and hotel guests are willing to pay more for rooms with biophilic elements. The conference discussed how the pandemic has had a massive impact on Scotland’s tourism industry and how it has fundamentally changed the way businesses operate and created a ‘new normal’.

We absolutely love working with the hospitality industry to provide creative bespoke eye-catching planting and floral designs across the country and we were thrilled to be a part of Scotland’s Tourism Industry Conference this year. We dressed the stage with our beautiful lush green plants. We’ve supported Scotland’s Tourism Industry Conference in 2019 and 2020 so it was fantastic to be able to support the event again.

It truly was a brilliant event, and we received some amazing feedback about our plants from Marc Crothall, CEO – Scottish Tourism Alliance.

We hope that everyone who attended Scotland’s Tourism Industry Conference had a brilliant time at the event, are inspired to work towards the Net Zero target and have many ideas on how to best recover and rebuild as we look ahead to 2022. We’re looking forward to next years event already!

Benholm Group Interior Design Survey

In September 2021 Benholm Group exhibited at the #DesignPopUp event for Interior Designers in Glasgow. Always a great networking opportunity and place to show designers how plants and flowers can contribute to fabulous interior spaces, it was also a chance to uncover more about what interests an Interior Designer.

This report summarises our conversations.

Sustainability

Perhaps unsurprisingly, given how frequently climate and sustainability issues are in the news and COP26 being hosted in Glasgow, this was one of the most discussed topic areas.

At its most basic, the Interior Designers we spoke to want to work with materials that are both recyclable and have been made from recycled waste. But it goes beyond that. For example, everything has a carbon footprint; even if something is made from completely natural materials, there was energy involved in its manufacture, it had to be transported from place to place, and the interior fit-out uses consumables such as glues, fixings and frames.

For this reason, there was a lot of interest in the embodied carbon for an item. What is its total carbon footprint? Is it consuming and fixing carbon? Can it contribute to a carbon net zero interior?

This then links into the eco story behind products. We’ll mention stories again in a moment, but the point here is that it’s more than just a data sheet on the carbon impact or a set of figures. Designers want to provide a context, tell the tale, excite the client with the emotional elements of their work, especially when that helps to sell an environmentally positive approach.

Biophilia & Lighting

Plants and flowers, whether in planters, living walls, baskets or anything else, contribute positively to interior spaces. There’s data to back this up – guests spend 36% more time in hotel lobbies where biophilic design has been applied, and guests are twice as likely to use the word ‘experience’ when providing feedback.

These factors are clearly on the radar for Interior Designers. They expressed an interest in knowing more about biophilic design in general, and the intersection of biophilic design and wellbeing specifically. They want to know about things such as planters, for example; where to get stylish planters, finding easy to move planters, and more.

Biophilic design can have straightforward functional benefits. One of the trends on the radar is micro-farming – creating indoor salad walls or indoor food farming.

Lighting as a general issue is high on the list for Interior Designers. In fact, lighting is another element of biophilia – it’s not just about plants, it’s every aspect of integration of natural elements into the built environment.

For this reason, both natural and artificial lighting are key factors where designers want to stay up to date.

Human Connection

Spaces must be meaningful to people to be effective. Functionality alone is insufficient, the space itself must add value.

That’s why phrases such as ‘soulful interiors’ appeared in our discussions. Designers want to find products with a story, and which have significance for the user.

The human connection also means designing for inclusivity, ensuring that everyone – no matter their circumstances – can access the space.

Textures, Materials & Colours

Predictably, this is a key area where Interior Designers spend a lot of time, and it is high on the list of things where they want to remain in touch with trends. What new materials are entering the market? What are the latest trends across the industry?

One specific item that stimulated discussion was Nordik Moss, a natural and sustainable product for green walls. It even elicited a heart with an arrow through it!

Budget and Value

Interior Designers are also concerned about the hard numbers. Designs have to meet budgets, but it goes beyond that. Designers want to know what value is delivered by any extras that are included in a design. A post-occupancy evaluation, quantifying the impact of the design, is an important final step.

Staying Current

So how do Interior Designers keep in touch with the things they need to know? Naturally there are a variety of sources of information.

Reading relevant media is top of the list, and there are a variety of favourite titles that people read.

On top of that there are formal meetings, forums, industry award events; and informal methods such as Pinterest, LinkedIn groups, Instagram and other communities.

Overall, we had some fascinating conversations. We would like to thank everyone who stopped at our stand to talk to us.
