Trends emerge and influence styling across many things and flowers are no exception.

Its always exciting to spot new trends and be the first to experiment with them! We’ve put together a list of some top floral trends we’ve picked up on that look set to gather momentum throughout 2020.

1. Neutral Shades

Soft colour palettes with subtle tonal differences, I’m seeing customers increasingly recognising the need for sustainability and organic produce and I’ve seen floral trends begin to follow suit, with increased demand for natural, earthy tones.

2. 70’s Inspired Psychedelics

In complete contrast inspired by colourful prints from the 70s, fashion and interior designers are taking the lead from the decade of flower power with the resurgence of unashamedly bright colour combinations. Which are great for giving spaces an instant injection of personality, I love creating a statement focal point with vibrant florals.

3. Functional Flowers and Plants

Mental Health remains a huge discussion point socially. This has seen an increase in the use of plants and flowers holistically, particularly to aid physical and mental health issues. Plants have significant health benefits – from cleaning the air and reducing anxiety to relieving headaches and boosting mood. For increased creativity and productivity – plants are your best friend.

4. Jewel Tones

Vivid and bright flowers are set to be popular throughout this year. Using bold blooms in bright jewel tones to make a style statement, whilst injecting a hit of playfulness to your interior space.

5. Minimalist Styling

When it comes to the arrangement of flowers, simplicity will be key in floral design for 2020. Design trends show an increasing demand for stripped back, minimalist compositions; we’ll be keeping it simple to keep it on trend.

Benholm’s love for all things green has seen the company recently welcome a brand new Head Florist to the stable. Strengthening our existing team of creatives and bring a breath of fresh air and new innovation!

In Elaine’s own words:

Me! I’m Elaine and have over ten years of experience in venue dressing at some of Scotland’s top spots including 5 star hotels Cromlix | Mar Hall, iconic venues including Brig O’ Doon | Roman Camp | Pollokshields Burgh Hall | Trades Hall of Glasgow |M onachyle Mhor as well as the super trendy barns including, Pratis and Comrie Croft.

I’ve been nominated for many top industry awards and my enthusiasm for all things floral is infectious, it’s given Benholm a whole renewed focus on floral design for 2020.

So to help you all get to know a little bit more about me and my style, I’ve agreed to be quizzed by the marketing team – so here we go!

What excited you most about joining The Benholm Team?

‘I understand just how important it is for businesses to make the very best first impression, and flowers are a fantastic way to do this. Reinforcing brand values, colours and ethos. I’m not only looking forward to expanding our weekly corporate deliveries, I’m also bursting with ideas for floral installations, real and artificial, for corporate and hospitality clients too.

Having been self employed for the last 10 years its great to be a part of a team. I’m seeing huge benefits of having the bigger Benholm operation around me. The distribution network and fleet of vans make getting freshly cut flowers to customers a seamless process. The buying power and weekly delivery of beautiful plants from Holland affords me a much bigger variety of flowers to order. It’s lovely to have a workshop amidst such a great team and greenhouse.’

What is your overall vision for the floral team?

‘To lead a team excited by flowers and all of their possibilities. To build on the enthusiasm and creativity we have and collaborate with our other departments and their specialised knowledge to create even more amazing floral designs. With plant and design expertise we can really push the boundaries together. I’ve been amazed to see what has already been created – Benholm have great craftsman skills to create almost everything in-house. That’s increasingly rare.’

What are you aims for the team in 2020?

‘In what looks to be a challenging year, we’ve already hit the ground running. I’ve enjoyed meeting our customers, seeing their spaces and making sure our flowers are as unusual and creative possible. We’re also expanding our floral offerings to attract a much wider range of customers – from regular weekly corporate displays to everything floral for hospitality venues & events to bouquets delivered anywhere in Central Scotland for any reason!’

‘Definitely meeting like minded creative individuals and having the opportunity to build huge floral structures. It is a fantastic opportunity to share ideas with the very best in the business, sharing innovative new floral techniques to stay one step ahead of the trends. I’m really looking forward to being involved again in the future.

Here are just 4 great reasons for bringing fresh flowers into your workplace:’

1. An easy way to redecorate or switch colour scheme

If you’re a fan of switching things up every now and again, flowers and plants are your friends. A cost effective way of making bright bold changes in your work place that don’t involve time or effort – and can adapt as the seasons change.

A huge bouquet of colourful flowers can make an otherwise neutral room look bright and cheerful. They can also create a welcoming entrance, or make a for stunning centrepiece in conference rooms.

Of course flowers look and smell amazing, but there’s more! Studies and scientific evidence have shown that having flowers in the workplace can increase our ability to work more efficiently.

An American study conducted over an eight month period, found that employees performed better in terms of innovative thinking, generating good ideas and problem solving in a workplace decorated with fresh plants and flowers. It concluded that men were able to generate around 30% more ideas in an office with flowers than in an undecorated spaces.

3. They make your staff happy

Who doesn’t enjoy the smell of fresh flowers on a dreary Monday morning? Flowers in the office great for cheering everyone up, including clients attending meetings at your office.

Enjoying bright flowers instead of colourless office walls provides a happier workspace – therefore creating better work. A happy workforce is a productive workforce!

4. They can improve memory and concentration

Various studies have shown that flowers can improve a memory and concentration in the workplace.

People believe that the presence and influence of nature can help people improve memory and their attention span by up to 20%. They increase employees abilities to focus on the task at hand and complete it to a higher quality. Brilliant!

Studies have also shown nature in the workplace has the ability to stimulate the senses and mind, improving mental cognition and performance.

Scottish Tourism Alliance Conference 2020

We’re huge advocates of tourism in Scotland and love working with the hospitality industry, providing creative planting across the country. It was fantastic to catch up with valued customers, meet new ones and find out about strategies being implemented for the challenging times ahead for the industry.

With the conference held on the banks of the Clyde in Glasgow’s, Scottish Event Campus, The Scottish Tourism Alliance is the largest member organisation for tourism businesses in Scotland and the leading representative body for the industry.

The conference provided an opportunity to officially launch ‘Scotland Outlook 2030.’ The First Minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon MSP took to the stage to endorse the strategy, which has the vision of Scotland becoming the world leader in 21st century tourism, announcing a £5.5M funding package over the next five years. The huge contribution of the tourism industry to the Scottish economy was celebrated before discussing future strategies and the significant challenges facing the industry…

Burning issues up for discussion included the corona virus, immigration challenges, climate change and sustainable tourism.

The Benholm Group were thrilled to be involved with dressing the stage and common areas, which, filled with lush green plants and bright pops of red. We were also grateful for the opportunity to showcase a selection of out outdoor dining options. With Easter fast approaching, thinking about the best use of valuable outdoor space is top of many hospitality professional’s to do lists.

We were delighted with our stand in the midst of it all. The showcase provided a relaxed setting for delegates to meet suppliers whilst enjoying drinks and nibbles with other attendees. It was great to meet other industry leading suppliers including fellow sponsors DWF Law, Machina, World Food Travel Association and Radisson Red. With many hotels, bars and restaurants already seeing the benefits of bringing the outdoors in, it was a pleasure to chat about it – as well as offering information about transforming outdoor spaces, and how we manage to ‘Scotland proof’ it!

All in all it was another brilliantly organised event by the STA team that enjoyed some great feedback, including our gifts, the Benholm seedboms! Let us know if they bloom and blossom, we’d love it if you kept us posted using the #greenwithenvy.
