Recap: Beyond Boundaries - A Holistic Approach to Workplace Design
Date Posted: November 7, 2023

Last week we hosted our highly-anticipated workplace design event with Spacestor and Liquidline at The Boardwalk in Glasgow.

“Beyond Boundaries: A Holistic Approach to Workplace Design” brought together workplace design professionals from a variety of industries to explore ways to create inclusive and inspiring workspaces.

Before the presentations and panel discussions began, guests had the chance to explore The Boardwalk. This is Spacestor’s new Showspace in Glasgow, created in collaboration with Impact Arts, a charity dedicated to addressing inequalities through creative engagement. Formerly The Old Sherrif Court, The Boardwalk has been kitted out with innovative Spacestor furniture, lush Benholm plant displays, and artwork crafted by individuals supported by Impact Arts.

Spacestor’s Joan Wright delivered a warm welcome to attendees, and introduced our Company Director, Adrian Byne, who presented an enlightening talk titled “Biophilic Design: Beyond the Aesthetic.” Adrian’s presentation included a tongue-in-cheek Ted Talk parody which presents office plants as a brand-new high-tech discovery, as well as delving into the myriad of ways in which biophilic elements, particularly live plants and foliage, can profoundly impact workplace diversity, inclusion, and employee well-being.

This was followed by an engaging “Designing for Inclusion & Diversity” panel discussion featuring Simah Aslam, Workplace Design Manager at abrdn, Fiona Doring, CEO of Impact Arts, and Hazel Houliston, Senior Design Manager at NatWest Group. They each shared their insights and experiences on crafting inclusive and diverse workspaces. Despite their varied professional backgrounds, they collectively underscored the significance of maintaining open communication with space users and the need for continual adaptation, especially in today’s rapidly evolving workplace environment where initiatives may not always yield the expected results.

After a short lunch and networking break, the event concluded on a creative note with a terrarium workshop led by our Maintenance Technician, Lulu. Guests had the chance to craft their own terrariums, which they could take home as a reminder of the day’s emphasis on harmonizing nature and design in the workplace.

We want to express our sincere appreciation for everyone who joined us at Beyond Boundaries. It was a pleasure to host such a gathering with our friends at Spacestor and Liquidline, and we hope to bring you more inspiring events in the future. Be sure to visit our Hub to explore upcoming design-related events that might be useful to you.

“Thank you to everyone involved in making this event a success. The terrariums were incredible Adrian Byne and Joan Wright you are a brilliant host.” Nathan Hannah, Business Manager at Liquidline

“We were delighted with the turnout, the involvement of our expert panellists and it has been a pleasure collaborating with the team at Benholm & supported by Liquiline for our first successful partnered event.” Joan Wright, A&D & End Client Account Manager at Spacestor

Plants are perhaps the easiest of all wellbeing initiatives to implement in an office, and their benefits can be felt instantly.
