Scottish Design Awards 2023: Finalists Announced
Date Posted: June 2, 2023

The Scottish Design Awards 2023 finalists have been announced, and the list is filled with some truly incredible projects.

After two days of deliberation; the nominees were chosen by a dozen-strong line-up of industry leading figures from the architecture and design professions.

Alistair Scott, co-founder of Smith Scott Mullan Associates and a member of the architecture judging panel, said: “Being a judge on the Scottish Design Awards is both a real privilege and also an education. You get to see the best work being produced in our country and how developing issues such as placemaking and sustainability are being addressed.

“Producing the level of projects that we saw takes a huge amount of skill and dedication, and as a practicing architect I know only too well the amount of time and effort that went into them – often by young, emerging designers.

“The future of Scottish design is bright, but I feel we don’t get nearly enough exposure internationally and events like these Awards should help to promote our skills to a wider audience and hopefully provide future opportunities”.

Among this year’s nominees are some fantastic projects we are immensely proud to have played our part in.

Virgin Hotel, Edinburgh

Category: Architecture – Commercial/Office/Hotel Building or Project

Having launched several successful hotels across America, Virgin chose Edinburgh as their entry point into expanding their services across Europe and beyond.

We were delighted to be approached by Ica Studio to add our professional planting expertise and creativity to this exciting project.

The Nucleus Building, Edinburgh

Category: Architecture – Education Building or Project

The Nucleus is a new learning, teaching and social hub which opened at the end of 2022 for all students and staff at The University of Edinburgh.

It features energising green spaces that are perfect for studying and working on group projects, or even just recharging between classes.

We worked on this project with our friends at 442 Design – an innovative design company that transforms venues and brands across the UK and internationally.

Winchburgh Campus, Broxburn

Category: Architecture – Regeneration

Winchburgh Academy is part of West Lothian’s biggest ever investment in education.

We helped to transform the campus dining area ahead of its opening last summer with the addition of beautiful Nordik Moss panelling.

Why use Nordik Moss?

  • Highly versatile, the design possibilities are endless
  • Low maintenance, preserved natural product
  • Acoustic balance, it makes spaces less noisy
  • Sustainable, 100% biodegradable harvested by hand from the forest floor

The awards gala is set to take place in Glasgow on Thursday the 29th of June in the stunning ballroom of the DoubleTree Hilton Hotel.
