Most businesses can tell you exactly what their office costs: rent, rates, energy, furniture, IT. Very few can tell you what a lifeless office is costing them.

It doesn’t appear on a balance sheet, but the cost is real. It shows up in flat afternoons, tired teams, quiet absenteeism and a workplace people tolerate rather than enjoy.

The “lean office” myth

For years, the dominant thinking was that a clean, stripped-back workspace made for a more efficient one: clear desks, neutral walls, nothing to distract. It sounds logical. The evidence says otherwise.

A field study by researchers at Cardiff University, the University of Exeter, Groningen and Queensland found that enriching a “lean” office with plants could increase productivity by 15%. The same research found that plants significantly increased workplace satisfaction, self-reported concentration and perceived air quality. Crucially, this wasn’t a lab experiment. It was monitored over several months in two large commercial offices in the UK and the Netherlands.

As lead researcher Marlon Nieuwenhuis put it, the findings directly challenge the idea that a lean office with clean desks is more productive.

What a grey office does to people

When nature is missing from a workspace, the effects are subtle but cumulative:

  • Lower energy and focus. Visually sterile environments offer the brain nothing to rest on, so attention fatigues faster.
  • Higher stress. Natural elements are consistently linked with lower stress responses. Take them away and the environment gives people less help when pressure builds.
  • A weaker sense of place. A grey office says little about who you are as a business. Employees and visitors feel it, even if they can’t say why.
  • A harder sell for the office itself. With hybrid working, your office has to give people a reason to commute. A bland space doesn’t.

Why nature works

This is the thinking behind biophilic design: humans evolved surrounded by natural forms, light and greenery, and we still respond to them. You don’t need to turn your building into a jungle to feel it. Even modest, well-considered planting changes how a space feels, and how people feel in it.

It’s easier to fix than you think

Bringing nature into a workplace doesn’t mean a major refit. Depending on your space, it might be:

  • Statement planting in reception and breakout areas, where first impressions and downtime matter most
  • Desk-level greenery to soften open-plan floors
  • Green walls and living ceilings where floor space is tight but impact matters
  • Moss features for a maintenance-free natural finish
  • Outdoor planting to make terraces and courtyards places people actually use

The part that gets overlooked is upkeep. Plants only deliver benefits when they look healthy, and tired, struggling plants can do more harm than none at all. That’s why a good planting scheme comes with proper maintenance built in.

Count the cost of doing nothing

If a lifeless office is quietly costing you in productivity, wellbeing and first impressions, the question isn’t whether you can afford to add greenery. It’s whether you can afford not to.
