THE BRIEF:
The Ubiquitous Chip, a Glasgow restaurant and cornerstone of the West End since 1971, has long been celebrated for its warm atmosphere and distinctive charm.
Founded by Ronnie Clydesdale in 1971, The Ubiquitous Chip was created as a dynamic space where people from all walks of life could come together to enjoy great food and good company. This unique restaurant offers six spaces, with each space catering to a different mood: an open rooftop terrace for dinner and drinks with a view, a cosy corner bar with hand-picked wines, a romantic mezzanine and brasserie, and the intimate Wee Whisky Bar.
Looking to evolve the space, while still honouring its cultural heritage and legacy, The Ubiquitous Chip approached Benholm to reimagine this iconic venue. The goal was to transform the existing layout into a more open and inviting courtyard, featuring bold statement furnishings and a luxurious yet welcoming atmosphere.
MAINTAINING CHARACTER WHILE ELEVATING VISUAL APPEAL
For more than half a century, the Clydesdale family has poured their passion and creativity into shaping The Chip into one of Glasgow’s most beloved dining institutions. Over the decades, The Chip has become a gathering place where generations have come together to share food, laughter, and stories. Its charm lies not only in its exceptional food, but also in its atmosphere, making it a true embodiment of Glasgow’s personality, character, and sense of community.
As a result, Benholm approached the transformation with deep respect for its history and identity. Our goal was never to reinvent The Chip, but only to reimagine it and enhance the space while preserving the details and quirks that make it so distinctive. Working closely with The Chip team, we set out to create an environment that would surprise and delight guests at every turn.
Through our bespoke approach, Benholm Group was entrusted with reimagining the entrance area, transforming it into a space that immediately captivates and welcomes guests.
Some of our work included:
Introducing lush greenery and vibrant seasonal flowers, bringing life, colour, and freshness to the space throughout the year.
Additions of diverse plant species: Parthenocissus Striata, Monstera Deliciosa, Scindapsus
Installing trailing planters that cascade gracefully, softening architectural edges and adding a sense of organic movement.
Positioning a striking yucca tree as a central focal point, adding height, texture, and a dramatic presence beside the pond, perfect for creating an intimate, romantic dining atmosphere.
Designing an overall aesthetic that harmonises elegance with nature, resulting in an entrance that feels both inviting and visually enchanting, setting the tone for the experience that awaits within.
THE RESULT
Lush greenery and vibrant flowers transform the space into a refreshing oasis.
Trailing planters add a playful, cascading effect, bringing movement and depth to the design.
The large yucca tree commands attention, acting as a striking centerpiece and conversation starter, nestled within the pond filled with koi carp.
Overall, the entrance now blends nature and design seamlessly, leaving a lasting impression and setting the tone for the experience inside.

Monitored and managed plant areas to support their upkeep during the project.
Researched and sourced new plant varieties to enhance the area’s diversity and aesthetic appeal.
Safely stored and preserved existing plants during the refit to prevent damage and ensure continuity.
Contributed to creating a positive environmental and visual impact in the workspace.
