PROJECTS » Kohler Waters Spa, St Andrew’s Old Course Hotel

Creating a sanctuary for those seeking the ultimate retreat

THE BRIEF:

The prestigious St Andrews Old Course Hotel, located just minutes from the charming Fife coastline, commissioned us to enhance their spa with key commercial planting solutions.

St Andrew’s Old Course is not only the oldest golf course in the world, but it is also the birthplace of the sport. The course itself dates back to the 15th century and it has become a hotspot for world-class golfers and tourists.

Following a major refurbishment, the award-winning Kohler Waters Spa has emerged as one of the most advanced spas in the UK. With a focus on holistic wellness, the spa offers an immersive experience that encourages guests to alternate between thermal treatments – moving from hot to cold to boost circulation, promote recovery, and restore inner peace.

To align with the spa’s ethos and elevate the overall guest experience, we provided a design solution that embraced biophilic design principles to connect the indoor environment with carefully curated greenery and natural materials. The objective for the final vision was clear – to create a serene, visually calming atmosphere that felt like an escape into nature while blending luxury and charm.

THE SOLUTION:

We delivered a multi-layered, biophilic design scheme tailored specifically for the spa’s various zones, with a mix of live and artificial planting to suit different environmental conditions while ensuring aesthetic harmony.

With our expertise in delivering commercial planting solutions across the UK, we were trusted to provide bespoke solutions to this dynamic leisure facility based in the prestigious home of golf.

SOME KEY BIOPHILIC PRINCIPLES INCLUDED:

·       A live Mediterranean olive tree with a moss top dressing serves as a striking focal point in the spa’s welcome area

·       Three elegant groupings of floor-standing live planters

·       Natural stone cobbles were used to enhance their organic appearance while also promoting water retention and minimal soil disruption

·       Each planter features vibrant, wellness-supporting live specimen plants which were chosen for their ability to thrive in humid spa conditions

·       A trio of artificial vase arrangements featuring textural eucalyptus pods and natural twigs provided an earthy, sculptural element with zero maintenance needs

·       The eco-conscious planters made from sustainable materials add interest and cohesion to the lounge, reinforcing the tactile, grounded aesthetic

·      An oval verita stone bowl provided a versatile option suitable for display on tables

THE RESULTS:

The final installation created a cohesive, nature-inspired spa environment that significantly elevated the guest experience. Now, visitors who attend the spa can step into a blissful, relaxing, visually retreat – all supported by the grounding effects of greenery and natural materials throughout.

The mix of live plants in high-humidity areas and artificial botanicals in lounge zones ensured long-term practicality without compromising the aesthetic.

The reception’s live olive tree serves as a memorable and symbolic welcome, reinforcing the spa’s wellness philosophy.

Overall, the installation has been praised by both spa guests and staff for adding to the spa’s reputation as one of the most thoughtfully designed wellness spaces in the UK.

The project for the St Andrew’s Old Course Hotel’s Kohler Waters Spa is a prime example of how biophilic design can elevate both aesthetics and wellness outcomes. Through carefully selected plant species, natural finishes, and spatial awareness, we helped craft a spa sanctuary that feels like a getaway – right in the heart of Fife.
