PROJECTS » Cadworks refresh, Glasgow

THE BRIEF

Located in the heart of Glasgow, Cadworks is home to a number of prestigious blue-chip companies, including OVO Energy, Savills, SThree, Barnett Waddingham, RBC Brewin Dolphin and TLT LLP. Perfectly positioned close to a variety of convenience stores, cafés, and transport links, it offers an ideal location for modern businesses.

While Cadworks may initially appear to be another premium office development, it stands out as one of the most sustainable buildings in Scotland. Cadworks is a 94,431 sq ft Grade A office and has achieved a BREEAM Excellent rating, a testament to its outstanding sustainability performance and it boasts a full Grade A specification throughout.

Looking to elevate their workspace and make a lasting first impression, the Cadworks team partnered with us to transform their office environment and design a show-stopping entrance. Nearly five years later, they returned to us to refresh the space once again, this time, with a focus on adding more seating and enhancing functionality.

THE SOLUTION

With a focus on enhancing health and wellbeing, we approached this project by installing a living wall featuring a diverse selection of plants, each chosen for its unique air-purifying qualities.

  • Bird’s Nest Fern (Asplenium nidus) – Recognised by its long, wavy, bright green fronds with smooth edges, this fern is known for its ability to remove airborne toxins and improve indoor air quality. It also releases moisture through transpiration, helping to maintain healthy humidity levels.
  • Calathea (Calathea makoyana or similar) – Characterised by its striking dark green patterns and lighter veins, this plant is a popular choice for decorative indoor environments.

Both species thrive in low-light, humid conditions, making them ideal for indoor wellbeing spaces. The lush, vibrant foliage not only contributes to cleaner air but also creates a calming, welcoming atmosphere for guests and staff alike.

REHOMING OUR LIVING WALL PLANTS

Cadworks wanted to make some changes and decided to create a seating area, this involved removing some of the living wall. As one of Glasgow’s first net-zero in operation building, we decided to uphold our commitment to sustainability by rehoming these plants so there was little waste.

One of our Business Development Managers, Jack joined forces with Karen, a volunteer from Young Lives Cancer Charity, to sell the plants to new owners which raised over £300 for the Young Lives charity.

THE RESULTS

Cadworks stands as a benchmark for progressive workplace design, a space that other companies aspire to emulate for its commitment to innovation, sustainability, and employee wellbeing. The building was envisioned as more than just an office, it serves as an environment that nurtures focus, creativity, and connection.

With Benholm’s incorporation of key biophilic design elements, Cadworks is a genuine haven for those immersed in the fast pace of daily work life. The introduction of greenery throughout the building brings nature indoors, offering visual and mental relief while improving air quality and overall comfort. These natural features not only elevate the aesthetic appeal of the space but also support health, productivity, and emotional wellbeing, which are key values at the heart of Cadworks’ design philosophy.

Drawing inspiration from Japandi-style interiors, the building now embraces a harmonious blend of Scandinavian simplicity and Japanese serenity. The seating area, featuring a striking central tree, becomes a focal point for relaxation and reflection. Natural materials, soft neutral tones, and carefully considered lighting contribute to a calm, balanced atmosphere where staff and visitors can unwind or engage in informal conversation.

Together, these elements create a workspace that goes beyond functionality and embody balance, sustainability, and a deep connection to nature. Cadworks now stands not only as a place to work but as a thoughtfully designed environment that enhances wellbeing, fosters collaboration, and inspires all who enter.
