Supporting start-up businesses

24 Feb 2016

Benholm Group was started from scratch over twenty-two years ago by the current owners who know first-hand how tough it can be for today’s entrepreneurs.

On Friday 12th February 2016 the First Minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon, opened the doors to the new Entrepreneurial Spark Edinburgh “hatchery”.  This is a dedicated business start-up space based in the heart of RBS’ global headquarters in Gogarburn, Edinburgh.

RBS Chief Economist Stephen Boyle says about Entrepreneurial Spark:

“We have tried for decades to accelerate the business start-up rate. Yet the gaps remain. The newest kid on the block to tackle this challenge is Entrepreneurial Spark. Born in Glasgow, it is the world’s largest free business accelerator for start-up and growing businesses. Its “chiclets” – the new business – are housed in “hatcheries” where they are mentored by experienced business people and have access to wifi, IT equipment and workspace.”  (You can read the full article here)

The new entrepreneurial centre in Edinburgh has been created in what was formerly the bank’s executive wing.  This space has been transformed by Michael Laird Architects to create an ecosystem of entrepreneurship and innovation.

At the entrance to this unique space, visitors are welcomed by one of Benholm’s Nordik Moss walls.  This is backlit creating a dramatic effect and has the name of the centre in clean white letters contrasted against the lush green moss.  A truly stunning entrance to a very special space!

Jim Duffy, Chief Executive Optimist, Entrepreneurial Spark spoke at the opening ceremony:

“I was thrilled to see the turnout at today’s opening ceremony for the new Edinburgh Hatchery. The space itself is fantastic and will really allow our entrepreneurs to grow and develop, becoming credible, backable and investible with the resource the bank has put in to the space helping to foster a collaborative, creative environment.”  (You can read the full article here)
